This was a month ago already? Sorry, I'm really late with this post...

As some of you might know, I went to Vietnam from 18th November 2009 till 24th November 2009. I was invited to talk at GNOME.Asia Summit, so I took some holidays, booked a flight, got my passport almost too late to get a visa, got the visa one day before I left and finally made it there without many problems. :)

About the flight: Well... I don't know how other people manage to sleep on the airplane, I certainly can't (being 190cm tall doesn't make this any easier). So, after a long flight I finally arrived in Ho Chi Minh City. Some of the volunteers met me at the airport and helped me to get a taxi to the hotel.

The weather in Vietnam was hot compared to Germany (30°C compared to 5°C we had in Frankfurt the day I was bording my flight), but every hotel room had air conditioning, so I could sleep well ;)

At the summit I held two presentations about thin clients, why the can be useful and how to set them up with Linux (slides are below this post). I also held a small workshop setting up an LTSP environment.

I really like to thank all the volunteers making the GNOME.Asia Summit a great success. They helped with translating the talks to Vietnamese
(having a talk with translation was probably new to me and most other speakers), helped getting material and most of the time were just awesome. They even had a really cool party with all of the speakers on one evening.

Also thanks to the organizers for this really great event, to all the sponsors and last but certainly not least the GNOME Travel Committee, which made it possible for me to attend the Summit.

I hope to see you all again next year at FOSSASIA!

Thu, 17 Dec 2009 12:22:11 -0800 New hardware http://blog.23.gs/new-hardware-1 http://blog.23.gs/new-hardware-1

I bought some new hardware to replace my power-hungry home server with something needing much less power.

Here are the specs:

  • Case: YY-C582BK-G
  • Board: Intel D945GSEJT (Atom N270)
  • RAM: Kingston ValueRAM 2GB
  • HD: SAMSUNG HM320II

And I'm still below 300€, which is quite nice considering that most Mini-ITX cases are pretty expensive.

I'm impressed by the board which has a BIOS option to select either the Intel Boot Agent or gPXE...

Thu, 17 Dec 2009 11:56:00 -0800 First post! http://blog.23.gs/first-post-1733 http://blog.23.gs/first-post-1733

I could not resist. I created a blog. So there you have it. Have fun.

This blog will contain a very mixed bag of content. Most will be technical, about open source, software development, and related stuff. Sometimes even real-life stories ;)
